Because HF gives qualitatively correct behavior [known from comparisons to accurate ab initio results], its density (change) can be trusted. Here the HF density of a chain in a field has been used to calculate the "exact" vxc for this system. The difference in the xc potentials with and without field clearly displays a linear term. The potential of the applied field is in the other direction, implying a counteracting nature for the xc linear term.
