Warped compactifications, obtained by turning on
fluxes, provide a promising setting for inflation in
string theory. The details of moduli stabilisation are
important, however. Superpotential stabilisation of
the volume modulus typically renders the inflaton
potential too steep. A sufficiently non-generic
superpotential, or perhaps other mechanisms of stabilisation,
might avoid this conclusion.
