The zigzag chain material SrCuO
2
is the most perfect 1-dimensional cuprate chain material found so far (see bands on the next transparency). There is only a very tiny coupling between the `zipped' subchains of the zigzag double chain, since the engaged oxygen orbitals are orthogonal. A somewhat stronger coupling arrises due to correlations of on-subchain fluctuations.
