LDA projected densities of states of CuGeO
3
. There is a very tiny hybritization of the relevant band at Fermi level with Ge states. Contrary to other interpretations our calculation yields the separation of the two antibonding chain bands essentially by crystal field instead of hybridization. The consequence is the same: ferromagnetic Hund's rule coupling on oxigen site is quenched by the split, and the coupling along the chain remains antiferromagnetically, with a strong frustration from second neighbor interaction.
