Coarse Graining via Markov State Models
Christof Schütte (Freie Univ. Berlin)

The talk will introduce Markov State Models (MSMs) as a general tool for coarse graining of multiscale problems originating from soft matter applications. We will start with a short introduction to the theoretical concepts behind MSMs. Then different applications ranging from the use of MSMs for resolving different time scales at different degrees of coarse-graining, to coarse graining of driven systems will be discussed. Finally, we will see that MSM theory also allows to estimate the effect of coarse graining on the longest relaxation processes in a system.
