This conference will take place in the middle of the four month KITP program on the Physics of Astrophysical Outflows and Accretion Disks. The program is designed to further recent theoretical progress in our understanding of the fundamental physics of accretion flows, outflows and jets, and the dynamical and thermodynamical connection between them. Much of this progress has been driven by large scale numerical simulations, but there has also been increased analytic and numerical understanding of the microphysics of these flows. It appears that a comprehensive physical, rather than phenomenological, theory of disks and outflows may be within our grasp.

The conference will bring together theorists working in all aspects of this field and observers who will present the challenges that physical theories of disks and outflows must satisfy.

The conference, like the program, will cover three related areas:
  • relativistic winds and outflows from pulsars, quasars, and gamma-ray bursts.
  • the launching of jets in accreting sources, and the relation between outflows and accretion.
  • the physics of accretion disks, ranging from young stellar objects to white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes.

  • The format will include a series of invited talks that will review both theory and obsevation in these areas, a few contributed talks, and plenty of time for interaction and discussion. If you are interested in giving a contributed talk or poster, please contact one of the coordinators directly by email:
