The phase diagrams of LSCO and YBCO. The top and bottom x-axes are adjusted so that the in-plane hole concentrations per CuO_2 plane agree. The hole concentration in YBCO is determined by matching the thermopower S vs. T profiles in the two cuprates. Note that the hole concentration for YBCO (y = 6.95) is ~ 0.25, rather higher than the `optimal' concentration x = 0.15 in LSCO. The new calibration suggests that LSCO may have a significantly `stunted' superconducting region compared with that in YBCO. The red broken line shows the Tc vs. x results measured in stressed films of La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4 (adapted from Sato et al. PRB 2000). The stressed curve for LSCO is closely similar. Stressing the films moves the Tc line of La- based cuprates closer to the YBCO line. [Y. Wang et al.]
