Alternative routes to novel vortex physics in ultracold gases

By now the cold gas community is well acquainted with the idea of rotating a cloud of cold bosonic atoms at very high speeds to produce analogs of quantum-Hall states, where quantum fluctuations disorder the vortex lattice. I will talk about other possible routes for producing unusual states of matter in rotating gases. These include introducing spin degrees of freedom, scattering resonances, periodic potentials, and finite temperature. I will include both positive results (where exciting phenomena can be observed) and negative results (where promising directions appear to be blocked by insurmountable barriers) with a goal of sparking heated discussions.
