Viscous Fingering and a Shape of an Electronic Droplet in the Quantum Hall Regime
Dr. Paul Wiegmann, James Franck Institute
Two different phenomena: (a) one classical: finger-like patterns in diffusion driven fronts, (b) the second is quantum: a pattern of electronic droplets in Quantum Hall regime, are found to be intimately related. They are described by the same equations scaled by a factor of up to 10-9. I will discuss the origin of this relation and insights into analysis of (a) singularities in nonequilibrium patterns and (b) interference phenomena at the QHE plateau transitions. The talk is based on a recent paper written with 0. Agam, E. Bettelheim and A. Zabrodin.
