Dr. Wheelon graduated from Stanford University (B.S., 1949) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Ph. D. in Physics, 1952). He has spent his professional life in the world of science and advanced technology. Dr. Wheelon joined the CIA in 1962 and served as the first Director of Science and Technology until 1966. He was responsible for technical collection and analysis activities, including U2 over flights and development of the SR-71 and Corona reconnaissance satellites.

He joined Hughes Aircraft Company as V.P. of engineering in 1966 and served as Executive V.P. before retiring from the position of CEO and Chairman of the Board of Hughes in 1988. Dr. Wheelon has a distinguished record of public service and holds numerous prestigious awards for his contributions to National Security, including being designated as a "Pioneer of National Reconnaissance" by the National Reconnaissance Organization in 2000. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
