Nonperturbative Approaches to String Theory

In the mid-90's it was realized that the five consistent perturbative superstring theories are all special limits of a more fundamental underlying theory, often called M-theory. To date there is no consistent nonperturbative background-independent definition of M-theory or string theory. This talk describes two models which represent partial solutions of this problem: matrix theory and string field theory. Some of the successes, limitations, and future prospects of these two approaches to nonperturbative string theory will be discussed.
