Magnetic Dynamics in Orbitally Degenerate Insulators
Bernhard Keimer, Max-Planck Institut
http://www.mpi-stuttgart.mpg.de/keimer/
Neutron scattering has been used to map out the magnon spectra of a series of pseudocubic insulators with one or two valence d-electrons. These spectra are fundamentally inconsistent with standard theories of lattice-driven orbital order and require a consistent theoretical description of the interplay between the spin and orbital quantum dynamics. Some steps towards this goal will be outlined.
