Quantum phases and critical points of correlated metals
Subir Sachdev, Yale University

The Doniach phase diagram has formed the basis of our interpretation of experiments in metals with local moments for many years. It contains the heavy Fermi liquid state, satisfying Luttinger's theorem, and a state with magnetic order in the local moments; the two phases are separated by a spin-density-wave critical point, described by a free critical field theory. I will describe recent proposals for new phases in this phase diagram, some characterized by topological order, and which can violate the conventional Luttinger theorem. Separating the phases of this expanded phase diagram are interesting new strongly coupled quantum critical points.
I discuss implications for experiments, some of which show scaling behavior characteristic of strongly-coupled critical points.
